Stop the career becoming meaningless
Professional actors who’ve accepted that no job is coming to save them…
One of the main problems they want to solve is when the work becomes meaningless
What’s the point of continuing if you don’t find what you’re doing Meaningful?
Especially if you’ve done it for 10 or 15 years and looking at the next 20.
For the vast majority of the homo sapien experience
The meaning of life was very simple
Survive
Because it was so damn difficult
Now something that helped our species go from the middle of the food chain to the top is connection
Stronger Relationships meant more resources and protection
And something that has helped us connect as a tribe for thousands of years?
Stories
That’s where actors come in
Our ability to act provides a service in helping humans connect, which helps our species survive another sunrise
Which is bloody meaningful :)
Now
There are three key areas we want to look at in order to get better at delivering great art (therefore increase meaning in our careers)
One
Stop developing useless skills
Skill development costs the most precious resources we have - time and energy.
It astounds me how the majority of classes and teachers are focussing on the minority of skills actually required for the professional industry - so be intentional and clear about the skills you actually need in order to provide the kind of art you’d like to.
Two
Stop exhaustively auditioning
Stop making yourself always available for acting. Stop anxiously organising self tapes. And stop being overwhelmed with how you should do things in order to please an industry which does NOT want you to please it
Three
Stop leaving work feeling unfulfilled
We work too damn hard and make too many sacrifices to not be able to put our head on the pillow feeling grateful and proud of the work we gave at work. It’s allowed to be fun, it’s allowed to be easy. Beginners place suffering on pedestal. Pros don’t.
Dive into each of those three key areas and systematically transform them!
Hope this helps.
