STOP GOING TO ACTING CLASS
Why do professional actors stop going to class?
Because the majority of acting classes focus on the minority of skills actually required for working professionally on set
The goal here is to develop smart skills
skills that are useful and in line with the kind of work we dream of contributing.
Three things getting in the way that
One. Stop Solving stupid problems.
Just because we’re working hard doesn’t mean we’re getting better at acting. So we need to figure out what are the most important problems we need to be solving. How. Firstly what form & style of acting makes your body feel most alive? And secondly, clearly identify the skills that are absolutely necessary in order to give that kind of work.
Then - and this leads us to our second problem - Stop listening to bad advice from de-energising people.
ask yourself, who is the best person to help me develop these skills required? Look at their proof - What have they done, who have they helped - that lets you know they are the best person to help you, for now. Remember, advice which makes your body feel clenched or exhausted, is the best kind of advice to ignore!!
And thirdly - stop overwhelming yourself by trying to be a good little actor.
Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. In an ocean of techniques, there are going to be a small minority which are going to work for you for now in the majority of circumstances. These are the ones you want to become great at first. No one gives a flying fuck about your animal work if you can’t breathe as yourself in front of the lens. Amateurs try do lots, pros do less, thats why they do it better.
What’s my point?
There’s nothing to celebrate about working hard. anyone can show up.
But If you’re able to make intelligent adaptive progress at building meaningful skills…
Everything in your career will become easier.
Hope this helps
